Gijón Aquarium: 20 years leading marine conservation in northern Spain

The Gijón Aquarium has become one of Spain’s leading centers for marine conservation and environmental education. In 2026, it celebrates its 20th anniversary with a special program focused on sustainability and biodiversity.

One of the most symbolic initiatives this year is the installation of a time capsule inside the main ocean tank, set to be opened in 20 years. This project highlights the importance of protecting marine ecosystems for future generations.

The aquarium also continues to strengthen its scientific role, particularly through its Marine Animal Recovery Center, launched in 2023, which plays a key role in rescuing and protecting endangered species.

Home to over 4,000 animals from hundreds of species, the aquarium recreates multiple aquatic ecosystems from around the world, offering visitors an immersive journey through oceans, rivers, and tropical environments.

In addition, the aquarium hosts educational activities, workshops, and events such as the “Wild Oceans FilmFest”, a documentary festival aimed at raising awareness about ocean conservation.

With more than 200,000 visitors each year, Gijón Aquarium continues to evolve as a key destination for families, tourists, and anyone interested in understanding and protecting marine life.
