Madrid’s Reina Sofía Museum: contemporary art returns to the spotlight with new exhibitions and cultural debates in 2026

The Museo Reina Sofía continues to strengthen its position as one of Europe’s leading cultural institutions in 2026. This year, the museum is not only presenting major contemporary art exhibitions, but also rethinking its permanent collection, sparking intense discussion among critics, artists, and visitors.

One of the museum’s most notable exhibitions is “History Does Not Repeat Itself, But It Rhymes. Dumile Feni: African Guernica”, a show that connects Picasso’s legacy with contemporary African artistic narratives. Another highlight is the exhibition dedicated to Aurèlia Muñoz, alongside the newly reorganized collection “Contemporary Art: 1975 – Present”, promoted by museum director Manuel Segade.

The museum has also returned to the cultural spotlight due to the ongoing debate surrounding the possible relocation of Picasso’s Guernica. Art experts recently emphasized that the iconic masterpiece should not travel again because of its fragile condition.

In addition, the Reina Sofía is preparing a major celebration for International Museum Day together with Radio 3, featuring twelve hours of music and cultural activities open to the public, reinforcing its role as a vibrant meeting place for art, society, and contemporary thought.

Visiting the Reina Sofía in 2026 means far more than admiring masterpieces — it is an invitation to join a global conversation about memory, politics, identity, and artistic creation.
