Santiago Cathedral: Opening Times, Ticket Options and Guided Tours of the Cathedral and Museum

Santiago Cathedral: Opening Times, Ticket Options and Guided Tours of the Cathedral and Museum

Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is one of Galicia's most important landmarks and one of the main destinations on the Camino de Santiago. Located in the heart of Santiago de Compostela's historic centre, the Cathedral offers visitors the opportunity to discover centuries of history, architecture, art and religious tradition.

For visitors who want to explore the monument in greater depth, WalaTickets currently offers two guided tour options of Santiago Cathedral and its Museum, both including a specialised guide and admission to the Cathedral and Museum.

What types of tickets can you book?

There are currently two guided tour options:

Santiago Cathedral and Museum Tour in Spanish: includes a specialised guide and admission to both the Museum and Cathedral. The experience lasts approximately 2 hours and is available from €4 per person.

Santiago Cathedral and Museum Tour in English: also includes a specialised guide and admission to the Cathedral and Museum, with an approximate duration of 2 hours. The English tour is available from €4 per person.

Both options are guided experiences, making them a great choice for visitors who want to learn about the Cathedral's heritage with the help of a specialist rather than simply exploring the building independently.

Spanish tour times

The Spanish-language tour takes place every day at the following times:

  • 10:00 AM
  • 11:30 AM
  • 1:00 PM
  • 4:00 PM
  • 4:45 PM

The activity is not available on 24, 25 or 31 December. A minimum of 2 participants is also required for the tour to take place.

English tour time

For visitors who prefer English, the English-language tour takes place every day at 1:00 PM.

As with the Spanish tour, it is not available on 24, 25 or 31 December, requires a minimum of 2 participants and lasts approximately 2 hours.

What can you discover during the tour?

Santiago Cathedral is closely connected with the Camino de Santiago and the tradition associating this location with the tomb of the Apostle Saint James. Its history can be seen throughout an extraordinary architectural complex built and transformed over many centuries.

During the tour, visitors can discover some of its most important areas, including the main nave, High Altar, Apostolic Crypt and various chapels, as well as admire the spectacular Cathedral façade from Plaza del Obradoiro.

One of the Cathedral's best-known features is the Botafumeiro, the enormous incense burner used during certain liturgical celebrations. Its use is not guaranteed during every visit, as it depends on the religious calendar and specific celebrations.

A visit combining the Cathedral and Museum

One of the advantages of these ticket options is that they go beyond the Cathedral itself. Admission also includes the Museum, allowing visitors to complement their tour of the church with a broader exploration of the artistic, historical and religious heritage associated with the Cathedral complex.

With an approximate duration of two hours, the tour provides a convenient way to explore both spaces accompanied by a specialised guide.

Important information before booking

The ticket is personal and valid for the date and time specified in the booking. Santiago Cathedral is also an active place of worship, meaning visiting times and access to certain areas may change because of liturgical celebrations, religious events, maintenance or other requirements of the Cathedral.

The booking page also states that the activity is not adapted for people with reduced mobility, while access to certain areas may be subject to specific conditions, capacity limits or mobility restrictions. Children must remain accompanied by a responsible adult.

As the Cathedral is an active religious site, visitors are advised to behave respectfully, keep their voices low and dress appropriately for a place of worship.
