Sagrada Família Touches the Sky: Final Cross Placed, Reaching 172.5 Meters as the World's Tallest Church
On February 20, 2026, the Sagrada Família Basilica marked a historic milestone: the upper arm of the cross crowning the Tower of Jesus Christ was installed, achieving the structure’s maximum designed height of 172.5 meters. After more than 144 years of construction, Antoni Gaudí’s dream soars higher than ever, making the temple the tallest church on Earth — an unforgettable moment in the centenary year of the architect’s death.

On February 20, 2026, Barcelona witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime event: the final piece —the upper arm of the 17-meter white ceramic and glass cross— was hoisted atop the Tower of Jesus Christ in the Sagrada Família. With this addition, Gaudí’s masterpiece officially reached its planned maximum height of 172.5 meters. This achievement surpasses Ulm Minster (161.5 m) and crowns the Sagrada Família as the world’s tallest church. The operation, carried out with a massive crane and live-streamed, was celebrated by lead architect Jordi Faulí as “a joyful day”.Scaffolding will remain for a few more weeks during cleanup and finishing touches, but the official inauguration and blessing of the tower is scheduled for June 10, 2026, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s death. Pope Leo XIV’s attendance is anticipated but not yet confirmed. With the exterior of the central tower now complete (interior work continues through 2027–2028), the next major phase will be the monumental Glory Façade starting in 2027 —the most ambitious and debated part of the entire project.A powerful symbol of perseverance, faith, and genius that, 144 years after the first stone, continues to inspire the world.
